Rochester to Shine a Light, Offer View Inside Historic Well

Crews uncovered well during 2012's Main Street Makeover project.

A historic well dating past the 1890s that was uncovered during last year's Main Street Makeover project will now be visible to pedestrians in downtown Rochester.

The well is located in the walkway in front of Blackbird Bistro and Gus O'Connor's in downtown Rochester.

"We had expected to find it many years ago during the sidewalk replacement," Trevarrow said.

The city this week is putting the finishing touches on displaying and preserving the well, complete with glass top and lights inside the well, so pedestrians can walk over and look inside, according to Kristi Trevarrow of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority.

The project uncovered several artifacts from Rochester's history, including human remains, old soda bottles and old Kroger receipts.

Trevarrow said a local mason was enlisted to restore the top of the well, and the project is expected to be completed by Friday.
