Why are we not seeing parents shouting at the top of their lungs? Why do I feel like I am the only one who sees the writing on the wall here? Like the oil and gas industry which pits neighbors against neighbors when it comes to leading mineral rights, as does our Legislature pits parents against schools with all of this testing. Both the Private Chstter School operators and the oil snd gas Industry walk away unscathed,,,,,,, and well funded I might add.....with our tax dollars! Our kids future is just collateral damage, in more ways than one!

I would agree with you whole heartedly if it werent for one caveat......Lansing wants to privatize our schools and eliminating requirements, means a slow death to every non core subject that we now take for granted. If we could be assured that our schools would be adequately funded to provide art, music, languages, core curriculum ect., I would be completely in agreement of flexible requirements.

Yes, kids need to be pushed and yes, they need to find their passion. However, the current mindset of cutting costs and funding, while allowing online/virtual schools to replace structured classrooms will only lead to the complete elimination of language programs in many schools.

We need to move on from the current business thinking that is running Lansing. Once we escape the grasp of our ALEC led legistators, we will hopefully get back to thinking about our kids and their future. Until then, remain wary of any legislation that allows for more flexibility. This is code for elimination and paves the way for the takeover by Charter schools.

I dislike shopping.....honestly! And.... shopping for schools seems even less inviting.........particularly when the choices are limited to 'for profit' organizations who are all talk!

No! Decrease the demand for these classes in the curriculum will lead to fewer opportunities for college prep students! The programs will dwindle as budgets are cut. Before you know it the foreign language departments will be gone! Our only opportunity for these classes will be private schools and Charters which is exactly what these legislators want!

Every education reform bill is written to give privately run education facilities a competitive advantage! Water down the curriculum and before you know it, those charter schools will be in demand!

To think that my mom read Les Miserables in French in a public school in the fifties, living in a working class steel town! My kids deserve the same opportunity!

In my opinion, let the charter schools take over the vocational school market! I want my local public school to stay competitive with the private college prep schools in the area!

I completely agree with the banker!

This lease signing for mineral rights is going on all over south east Michigan. Ask yourself why NOW? They have done seismic testing in the past and nothing was done. But GUESS WHAT?.......We have NEW technology now.......and it is called HORIZONTAL HYDRAULIC FRACTURING! Believe me, they will go ahead with it AT ALL COSTS when they get enough mineral rights leased. There are NO BOUNDARIES and NO LIMITS! COLLEEN is right, the ONLY WAY to stop FRACKING is to NOT SIGN........and BAN IT!

Those basic needs aren't met without a little effort! I can't think about the big picture or even attempt to wrap my mind around how you think ....... until they are .......(Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs)............

Really? When I ask my mostly conservative friends and relatives what it means, they don't even know what it means....but I don't need to explain that to you. Perhaps if we weren't all so rigid in our thinking and learn to question that which we hear from 'so called' authority and from the media, we might come to realize that we are really all on the same page. The real obstacles are money and religion.....but will stay far, far away from those topics here.....:)

By the way, neither 'liberal' nor 'conservative' are bad words........turn off the TV....

You won't get me riled with the Obama comments today. I am not exactly please with him on either the environmental issue or education.
