Welcome Back, Rochester Students: 'U. R. Awesome!'

Stoney Creek teachers create poster messages to help 2013 start off right.

It was a cold morning on Monday, but at Stoney Creek High School, students were welcomed back after a two-week winter break in the warmest of ways. Teachers and administrators lined the school entryways displaying handmade messages of encouragement for students. It was the idea of teacher Cara Lougheed, who saw something similar on Twitter and encouraged her colleagues to play along. "Let's start 2013 off right," Lougheed wrote in a message to teachers. "But let's TRY to make Monday not just a good day, but a GREAT one." Stoney Creek Assistant Principal Amanda McKay sent us these photos from the morning. We're sharing on Patch because we think the messages of encouragement can apply to all students of Rochester. Welcome back!

West Bloomfield Football Assistant Fired After Incident in Rochester

Patch reviewed video from Friday's West Bloomfield/Stoney Creek football game, which ended with a player being arrested for assault and battery.

A former West Bloomfield High School varsity football assistant coach said he was fired from the team by Lakers head coach Ron Bellamy after an incident Friday at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester that resulted in a player being arrested on the field and suspended from school. Lakers athletic director Pat Watson confirmed Tuesday that Phil Sacha, a defensive assistant coach, was fired from the team; Watson would not comment why. Sacha, a 25-year-old Commerce resident, took to Facebook on Sunday to explain that Bellamy, a former NFL player, fired him as a result of disagreeing opinions. "West Bloomfield players, I wish you best of luck the rest or the season, but Coach Bellamy has decided to let me go from my coaching position, because …

Stoney Creek Class of 2012 Graduation Marked with Tears, Cheers

Stoney Creek High School's Class of 2012 graduated on Tuesday at Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac.

As parking lots quickly filled up, many supporters of the Stoney Creek High School Class of 2012 opted to walk to Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac for Stoney Creek’s commencement ceremony, rather than wait for one of several shuttles from neighboring lots.  This set the tone for the ceremony: one of great love and support for the graduates.  Stoney Creek principal Larry Goralski spoke fondly of the students of the Class of 2012, proud of their excellence.  This was exemplified in his saying to them: “Always remember Stoney Creek staff, and Mr. G., love you.” Commencement speakers Anna Rode, Charles Kern, and Shelby Spahar brought graduates to tears with their memories of time spent at Stoney Creek.  Kern spoke about things he would have …
