Rochester Board of Education Selects Shaner as New Superintendent

In a unanimous decision Thursday evening, the board chose Dr. Robert Shaner to fill the district's top position.

A decision was finally reached Thursday evening in selecting a new superintendent for Rochester Community Schools. During a special meeting held by the Rochester Board of Education, Dr. Robert Shaner was chosen to fill the role. Shaner, current director of instruction and technology for Warren Consolidated Schools, was the only candidate up for the position after David Richards, superintendent of Fraser Public Schools, withdrew his name from consideration on Wednesday. The search has been underway to find a replacement for former Superintendent Fred Clarke, who resigned in September. According to school board President Beth Talbert, 26 individuals applied for the superintendent job posting last fall. The competition was narrowed down to …

Superintendent Candidate Withdraws Name

Robert Shaner, director of instruction and technology for Warren Consolidated Schools, is now the only candidate for the Rochester Community Schools superintendent position.

Updated 3:30 p.m. David Richards, superintendent of Fraser Public Schools, withdrew his name from consideration for the Rochester Community Schools superintendent position, according to Debra Hartman, Rochester Schools communications director. She said Richards did not give a reason for withdrawing his name. That leaves Robert Shaner, director of instruction and technology for Warren Consolidated Schools, as the only candidate. "The board is going to interview Dr. Shaner tonight at 5 p.m.," Hartman said. "Then they have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow night to vote whether to offer Dr. Shaner a contract." Rochester Board of Education members picked Richards and Shaner as the finalists for the position two weeks ago. The search has been …

I am also concerned about the Board discussion tonight. When there are multiple candidates, a viable strategy - and one employed by the Board in the past - is to discuss the positive points of each candidate. With an up/down vote, the negative attributes, which every candidate possesses, also need to be explored. Will the Board, which has cautioned others about negative comments which go on the …   more ›

Rochester School Board Narrows Superintendent Candidates To 2

Finalists will return for second interviews in two weeks.

David Richards and Robert Shaner have been named finalists in the search for Rochester's next superintendent.  Who are these men? They were the educational leaders thought to be the "best fit" for inspiring Rochester Community Schools staff and improving achievement for students, Board of Education members determined just before midnight Wednesday. Richards, superintendent of Fraser Public Schools, and Shaner, director for instruction and technology for Warren Consolidated School District, will return to Rochester in two weeks to visit with principals, teachers, students and parents. And the public will get a chance to meet them during an open house Jan. 22. Here's why they were chosen as finalists. Board members unanimously picked …

Integrity. Webster’s defines it as a “firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: INCORRUPTIBILITY”. Then the first sentence describing integrity states ”He's a man of the highest integrity.” I’m partial, I’ve known Dr. Shaner for 40 years, and no I’m not a relative. His oldest friend (as in # of years). To say that Dr. Shaner has integrity is to say that water is wet. To …   more ›

I wonder how Ford and General Electric search for CEOs. Is there a newspaper that sidelined chief executives look at to explore new opportunities? I'm sure this is a "first steps" kind of thing, but in my experience Executives recruited. I'd love to hear more about what our search committee is doing to actively recruit superintendents from other high-performing school districts to come to ours. …   more ›

Rochester Schools to Pay Up to $181,000 to Fred Clarke, Who Officially Resigned

The superintendent's severance hinges on whether he becomes employed by Bay-Arenac or another district in the next three months.

Superintendent Fred Clarke is leaving Rochester Community Schools after 14 months with as much as $181,000 severance, according to the deal approved by the Board of Education Monday night.* That represents about $13,000 for every month Clarke served the district. Clarke was chosen in 2011 as the top candidate to lead as superintendent. He started July 1, 2011, and officially resigned Monday. During a 20-minute special meeting, Board of Education members outlined the agreement and offered their best wishes to Clarke, who did not attend. Board members also expressed their desire to "get back to work" after two months of uncertainty in the district's leadership role. Clarke's resignation follows his announcement in July that he was looking to…

bettylou... the MEA is most certainly required. That, or pay to the MEA some "agency fee", equivalent to the MEA dues. Paying it is not voluntary, and either way paying the MEA is a condition of employment. I must say that this paranoia is acute beyond reason. The MEA protects a teacher's family and students? Or that any discussion about education means the destruction of public education? This …   more ›
