Rochester College Professor Questions Push to Add 'University' to Name

"In my opinion, also shared by a few other faculty, this is simply a marketing move that is deceptive, trying to be in name what we are not with integrity," Craig Bowman writes.

Can Rochester Area Handle Two Universities?

The president of Rochester College is taking the pulse of students and the community on whether to change the school's name to Rochester University.

What's in a name? That's what the leader of Rochester College is wanting to find out. President Rubel Shelly is asking the campus and surrounding community to weigh-in on a potential name change for the school. Should it be Rochester University?  “Twenty-five years ago, there was a gentleman’s understanding that university was for big schools with schools of education, and schools of medicine, and schools of this and schools of that. Undergraduate teaching colleges that focus on bachelors-level work tended to be called colleges,” Shelly said in a report this week in The Shield, the college's newspaper. Rochester College was founded in 1959 as the North Central Christian College; its name changed to Rochester College in 1997. In the short …

Rochester College Begins Search For New President

The college's interim president, Rubel Shelly, will transition to chancellor by next fall.

Rochester College has begun a national search to find a "qualified, experienced and visionary president" for the college before next spring, the school has announced. In a news release, William Anderson, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the college, said the new president would likely take over leadership of the school in the fall of 2013. President Rubel Shelly asked the board earlier this year to find his replacement so that he could step away from the presidency in September 2013. Shelly was named interim president in the spring of 2008, and, at the board’s request, has continued to serve as president during a "challenging period of transition in the college’s history," according to the news release. “Dr. Shelly’s tenure has not …

Former OU Hoops Star is Back in Town, Playing for Rochester College

Drew Maynard, who was suspended from Oakland University two years ago, is "amazing addition" to the Warriors, coach Klint Pleasant says.

This story was originally published on www.BallInMichigan.com In the second half of a win over University of Michigan-Dearborn Nov. 7, Rochester College‘s Drew Maynard caught a lob from teammate Dramell Hogan and finished high above the rim with a dunk that brought out some ‘ooohs’ from the crowd. Although plays like that are not the norm at the NAIA level, they’re becoming a common site for Rochester thanks to Maynard’s addition to the team. “He’s coachable, he’s extremely talented and I think he’s probably the most electrifying player we’ve ever had,” said Rochester coach Klint Pleasant. “He’s really jelled with our team really well.” In the team’s near-upset of Division I Kent State, Maynard also made some above-the-rim plays, footage …

Undiscovered Rochester Hills Coffee Shop Serves Up Caffeine for a Cause

Chances are you've driven by Kibo Corner coffee cafe hundreds of times; here's why, next time, you should stop in.

Inside a former instrument storage room on the campus of Rochester College, a small cup of dark roast coffee is helping to make a big difference. With the help of a few dedicated volunteers, the storage room inside the college's student center has been transformed into a working coffee shop. Called Kibo Corner Coffee Cafe, it features coffee and espresso drinks, hot chocolate and tea.   The coffee shop is named for the highest point in Africa, the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro. All of its proceeds support development projects in East Africa. But to those who grind and brew the beans each morning, the story is much bigger than coffee. Kibo Corner is open from 7:30-11 a.m. every weekday. It's located inside the college's Ham Library building on …

I can vouch for the good coffee as well as the great work Kibo does in Uganda. I just returned from a 2 week trip of my own immersed in Kibo and Jinja. Buy the coffee but, more importantly, ask questions about what Kibo is doing in the world.   more ›
