Here are some family activities you can do to foster environmentalism. Sponsored by Sony.
Very few events are celebrated around the globe, but Earth Day is. This year, it’s come and gone. But we’re here to ask: What can we do to show our love of the earth on that day, and every day? On May 31st, Sony will release After Earth, an action-packed movie that takes place 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity to leave. It’s the kind of scenario that makes you want to donate to Greenpeace, recycle everything, and start biking every where, immediately. So, in honor of Earth Day, Patch has teamed up with Sony to present these ideas for making every day Earth Day. How can we make every day Earth Day? Begin with little things. Easy things. Obvious things. Things we take for granted each day, and use and/or abuse because of …

They'll implement the first phase of the program at some schools this school year.
Nine schools will implement a recycling program this year following the Rochester Board of Education's unanimous approval Monday of a four-year waste removal and recycling contract. The $78,540 contract with Waste Management includes waste-removal services at 27 school district locations. An additional $7,543 is projected for the first year of the recycling program, which will be tested at nine schools. The following schools will be part of the pilot program: Adams High School, Stoney Creek High School, Rochester High School, West Middle School, Van Hoosen Middle School, Hart Middle School, North Hill Elementary School, McGregor Elementary School and Delta Kelly Elementary School. The program would involve the recycling of paper, plastic …

Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at School Administration Building.
The Rochester Community Schools Board of Education will hear an update from a Recycling Committee about the costs and benefits related to implementation of a districtwide recycling program. The committee, which includes school administrators, parents and students, is recommending the district start recycling in phases and that Waste Management provide the recycling services. According to the recommendation report, the recycling program would start with nine school buildings the first year before expanding to all buildings. It would be a "single stream" recycling program, where all recyclables would be mixed into one container or truck and later sorted at a recycling facility. Costs of the program would be $7,544 for the first year (that …

At elementary school's Science Fair Expo, kids show off recycling and clean water experiments.
Two groups of Musson Elementary School students had experiments at Thursday’s Science Fair Expo that focused on teaching others about the environment, such as clean water and recycling. Among the dozens of science fair experiments on display at Musson was a project created by fifth-grade girls involved in Girl Scouts Troop No. 43250. The project focused on three concepts: reduce, reuse and recycle. To earn their bronze award, troop members came up with the project and sought out ways to conserve energy, repurpose objects and learned the best methods for recycling. "They were very eager and excited to be able to show off what they've been looking into," troop leader Sharon Ostrander said of the girls participating in the science fair. "They…

Board sets new contract with Waste Management.
The Oakland Township Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night revolved around two hot topics: the Older Persons’ Commission’s budget and recycling within the township. Trustee Kathrine Thomas has been looking into alternatives to the township’s current recycling program for about a year. The township has two collection bins provided by Waste Management, which are set up every Saturday behind the Sheriff’s Office Substation. Residents are able to visit the bin to recycle their cardboard and other items. However, Thomas reported there has been a lot of misuse of the bins, costing the township even more money. “The recycle bins have been quite abused,” she said. “We have found carpeting in recycle bins and we get weighed for the recyclables …

The idea was brought up during Monday night's Rochester Hills City Council meeting.
A Rochester Hills resident suggested that city leaders conduct a survey of residents to see how many homes do not set out their recycling bins — and to do a spot check to see how many bins are only half full.* Resident Lee Zendel offered the idea Monday night in the public comments section of Rochester Hills City Council's regular meeting. "I have a feeling that the vast majority of residents by now only fill their recycle bin less than half full each week, especially those who crush their recyclable boxes and plastic bottles," Zendel said. "As such, a bi-weekly recycle pickup schedule would reduce the number of garbage truck miles on the city's streets by 25 percent." Rochester Hills converted to a citywide waste hauler service in 2009; …

The district has sought bids for waste and recycling services and will form a committee to study the issue.
Should Rochester Community Schools invest in a districtwide recycling program? The answer to that question will be debated in the coming months, as the district explores the costs, benefits and drawbacks of a coordinated recycling effort. Recycling in Rochester's 22 elementary, middle and high schools is loosely organized based on the school. Some schools coordinate recycling efforts through school Green Committees or parent-teacher groups. Many have permanent bins in parking lots for recycling paper products — though it's up to the individual classrooms whether and how to use the bins. Some schools separately recycle batteries, ink cartridges and plastic bottles. "We have always had requests to look into recycling as a district, but we've…
