Patch Readers Raise $5,512 to Fight Hunger in Rochester and Beyond

The Patch Fights Hunger initiative spurred 119 people in 30 Patch cities to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season.

More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. Patch readers from across the region "shopped" Gleaners' virtual store and saw exactly what their donation would buy for a person or family in need. How much did each community raise? A Look at Hunger in Rochester — And How You Can Help

In this season of being thankful and giving back, here are ways to help make others' holidays warmer right here in town.

The holiday season is a time of joy, and — if one's lucky — of plenty. Sadly, hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. In Rochester Community Schools, 1,986 students qualify for free or reduced breakfast or lunch; that's about 13 percent of the district's total enrollment. Last year, the Rochester Area Neighborhood House served 2,500 families in Rochester, Rochester Hills and the surrounding areas; those services included 1,433 food pantry orders serving 3,233 individuals. And from January through August this year, God's Helping Hands of Rochester Hills has assisted 2,473 families by providing more than 100,000 pounds of food.  But…

24,000 Cans and $8,000 Cash: Now That's a Donation, Kids!

It's the biggest-ever donation that the Rochester Area Neighborhood House food pantry has ever seen, and volunteers are still busy sorting through the gifts.

Students from Rochester, Adams and Stoney Creek high schools contributed recently to the largest donation in the history of the Rochester Area Neighborhood House Food Pantry. "It's unbeliavable," said Lorraine Kremer, director of the food pantry, which is housed inside the First Congregational Church in Rochester. The high schools competed to collect canned food and cash donations for the food pantry. In all, they collected 24,000 cans and $8,000 in cash. On Friday, volunteers from the schools transported and sorted the food; they worked from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. until the food was starting to overtake the overflow area in the church hallway.  And the donations from schools continue this week: on Monday, the food pantry was receiving …

This Thanksgiving, Help Patch Fight Hunger in Michigan

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.

The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

Help Patch Fight Hunger in Rochester, Rochester Hills

It's a virtual food drive, and you can purchase anything from a box of granola bars to meals for a family of 4 for a week. Let's help feed hungry families, Patch readers!

The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch.com, through its 30 Michigan sites, is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed area families. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Patch is proud …

Leave Your Canned, Boxed Food on Your Doorstep Saturday, Rochester

The Boy Scouts distributed grocery bags across town this week as part of the annual Scouting for Food initiative.

You may have noticed an empty plastic bag hanging from your front door or mailbox this week.  It's part of the annual "Scouting for Food" initiative from the Boy Scouts of America; the scouts will pick up the filled bags of food beginning Saturday morning in Rochester and Rochester Hills. Here's what you need to know — and how you can help if you didn't happen to get a bag.

A Blustery Day Didn't 'Scare' These Runners Away

The Second Annual Scare Away Hunger 5K raised more than $20,000 for the Rochester Area Neighborhood House.

The Food Pantry at the Rochester Area Neighborhood House has been running on empty. For the first time ever in its 45-year history it was nearly out of tuna fish. "We used to have a room full of tuna," director Lorainne Kremer said. "Now we're down to two cases." With a typical day seeing 17 families at the Food Pantry, two cases would not last long. It was a scary situation—until 470 runners and walker came to scare hunger away. Sponsored by Renaissance Capital Alliance and Citizens Bank, the event, in addition to the run, is an opportunity for the community to bring their families out to the Rochester Municipal Park, have fun and raise money for those in need. This year's event raised over $20,000 for the Rochester Area Neighborhood …
