OUCARES, based at Oakland University, will offer classes like yoga and drawing inside a former Rochester Hills elementary school.
One of the Rochester-area community's most innovative and resourceful autism programs will open a second location inside a former Rochester Hills elementary school. Starting in February, Oakland University's Center for Autism Research, Education and Support, also known as OUCARES, will offer programs at Meadows School, part of the Avondale Schools district. Drawing, volleyball and yoga, as well as classes on social skills, are some of the opportunities that will be offered at the Auburn Road school. "We've demonstrated success with our parents and with the community, and we've had a tremendous response to the autism programs we offer," stated OUCARES director Kathy Sweeney in a press release. "This opportunity allows us to open more …

The movie star uses his background in special education to teach kids with autism about the industry he loves.
Inside a bright and airy atrium on the campus of Oakland University, a Travolta is leading a group of 50 students in an early morning dance party. But this is no disco. And, to clarify, it's Joey Travolta — not his Grease-is-the-Word brother, John. And as much as you may want to make this a story about the Hollywood name and his dance moves, it's really about the kids he's teaching to love the art of film. Joey Travolta is the director of Inclusion Films, a movie-making workshop for children and adults with developmental disabilities. It's based in California, but Travolta and a staff of nine travel the country to bring two-week intensive camps to settings like the Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support (also …

Through bowling and other rec programs, OUCares makes a difference.
Inside a Rochester Hills bowling alley on any given Saturday morning, a group of teens and adults are learning a lot more than how to throw strikes and spares. Just ask Sarah Stark. The Oakland University senior is helping lead the group of future bowling enthusiasts through OUCares, also known as Oakland University Center for Autism Research, Education and Support. Stark is studying special education and volunteers with OUCares to gain experience in her field. On mornings like today, this volunteer work is giving her much more than field training. "These individuals are teaching me a lot more than I could ever teach them," Stark said in between offering cheers and high-fives to the bowlers. The bowling league, which takes place Saturday …

The goal of the camp is to improve the lives of children with autism and their families.
Rusty the golden retriever sits patiently as, one by one, the campers paint each of his four paws either red, blue, or yellow and press them onto the long white paper banner. “Those are Rusty’s paws, would you like to paint your paws, too?” lead teacher Allison Dolehanty asks the hesitant child, handing him a paintbrush dipped in his favorite color. Painting their "paws" is just one of the many activities available for campers at this year's OUCARES summer camp for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1 in 110 children in the United States is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum disorder. This number is continuing to rise. The Oakland University Center…

He's been involved in some great programs. Impressive, and really nice to hear. On a totally different note - anyone notice that younger pix of him look like Alec Baldwin? See Google.   more ›
