No, It's not Santa or his miniature reindeer. It's Musson Elementary principal, Victoria Righter celebrating her students' successful efforts to raise funds for a school in Guatemala.
Friday morning's weather was drizzling and 37 degrees, but according to Victoria Righter, principal of Musson Elementary, it was "beautiful." Righter should know, she was in the perfect spot to enjoy the elements— the Musson roof. She wasn't up there checking for leaks or cleaning the gutters. Righter was making good on a promise she had made her students. This fall Musson students waged a Penny War to raise money for a school in Guatemala that had a huge hole in its roof. The school needed $1,000 to build a new roof. Righter told her students if they raised $2,500 she would spend a day on their roof. The students raised $4,573.74. "I know this group and when they set a goal, they're going to reach it," Righter said. This morning Righter…

The Second Annual Scare Away Hunger 5K raised more than $20,000 for the Rochester Area Neighborhood House.
The Food Pantry at the Rochester Area Neighborhood House has been running on empty. For the first time ever in its 45-year history it was nearly out of tuna fish. "We used to have a room full of tuna," director Lorainne Kremer said. "Now we're down to two cases." With a typical day seeing 17 families at the Food Pantry, two cases would not last long. It was a scary situation—until 470 runners and walker came to scare hunger away. Sponsored by Renaissance Capital Alliance and Citizens Bank, the event, in addition to the run, is an opportunity for the community to bring their families out to the Rochester Municipal Park, have fun and raise money for those in need. This year's event raised over $20,000 for the Rochester Area Neighborhood …

The Pontiac charity is the recipient of cash and food donations thanks to Adams and Musson students.
Tears flooded Shannon Sokol’s eyes when she heard the ballpark figure that Adams High School students raised for Grace Centers of Hope. Sokol, who is the communications director for the Pontiac-based charity, was floored, she said — even before learning that the total amount raised during the school’s charity week for the organization was $21,400, surpassing the student body's goal by over $6,000. “I am still amazed … just in awe at all that they’ve done,” Sokol said. “We felt unbelievably honored and absolutely speechless in the amount that they raised.” Prior to charity week, which took place last week at Adams High School, a handful of charities presented their missions and needs to the student council. The student council then made the…

At elementary school's Science Fair Expo, kids show off recycling and clean water experiments.
Two groups of Musson Elementary School students had experiments at Thursday’s Science Fair Expo that focused on teaching others about the environment, such as clean water and recycling. Among the dozens of science fair experiments on display at Musson was a project created by fifth-grade girls involved in Girl Scouts Troop No. 43250. The project focused on three concepts: reduce, reuse and recycle. To earn their bronze award, troop members came up with the project and sought out ways to conserve energy, repurpose objects and learned the best methods for recycling. "They were very eager and excited to be able to show off what they've been looking into," troop leader Sharon Ostrander said of the girls participating in the science fair. "They…

Third-graders from Musson Elementary School in Rochester Hills got a taste of Native American culture Wednesday.
Musson Elementary School third-grade students had a chance to get out of the classroom Wednesday and explore artifacts at Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve. While visiting Rochester's Dinosaur Hill, students learned about the culture of Native Americans who settled in Michigan, including their eating habits, clans, babies, what seasons meant for them and how they survived on a day-to-day basis. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, touch and even try to use many of the artifacts on display. According to third-grade teacher Karen Holdren, the field trip is an annual event for third-grade students at Musson. Part of their curriculum entails learning about Native Americans and Michigan history, Holdren said. “Anything that they get to do…

Great job, Musson Mustangs! One thing I found very impressive about Musson was the Musson Money for the school store is earned through good behavior. That is a great incentive for students to be helpful and kind.   more ›
