Share Your MPHSH Hockey Showcase Photos

Rochester Unified and Stoney Creek High School are among the sixty teams throughout Michigan that will compete in the hockey showcase through Feb. 10 at the Arctic Coliseum Arena in Chelsea.

The third annual Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase is under way at the Arctic Coliseum Arena in Chelsea this week. The tournament is the largest high school athletic showcase and the largest public high school showcase in the history of high school athletics in Michigan. Stoney Creek High School beat Novi 3-2 on Feb. 4; the team plays South Lyon on Sunday, Feb. 10. Rochester Unified plays Escanaba on Friday, Feb. 8, and East Kentwood on Saturday, Feb. 9. Red Wings Alumni Mickey Redmond Visits North Hill Elementary with the Red Wings School Assembly Program

Area students learned the importance of exercise and a healthy diet at a high energy assembly put on by the Red Wings Foundation.

Want to see 600 plus elementary students really lose their minds? You know, chant, cheer, scream and shout? Then talk about education, dedication and, of course, a healthy diet. "How's that?" you ask. Well, it helps if the message comes wrapped in a red and white winged wheel and with a special guest. North Hill Elementary hosted The Detroit Red Wing School Assembly last Friday, one of 115 Detroit-area schools to do so. The one-hour assembly, now in its third year, promotes an active lifestyle, including healthy eating and exercise tips. It's sponsored by the Detroit Red Wings Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Kroger. Family's Private Ice Rink a Labor of Love, Pucks and Skates

The Mir family has built an ice rink in their Springhill backyard for the past seven years.

Maybe it's our Canadian childhood, where outdoor rinks were commonplace and everyone knew how to skate, but it wouldn't be winter for my family without a pile of skates by our backdoor.  Our own rink began seven years ago while trying to think of activities to keep sons Tariq and Yusef, now 13 and 11, busy during the winter months.   With little sister Saira arriving any day, the ice rink was perfect for mom, who could stay warm and cozy inside with baby while the older kids played outside on the rink. In the beginning we (the royal we) consulted a step-by-step book for building rinks that we picked up in Canada called Thanks, Dad! How to Make a Backyard Skating Rink Your Family Will Love, by Murray Feick. The book gave us practical …
