Former OU Player Benson, Now in NBA, Immortalized With Retired Jersey

'We made the school a known place around the nation,' Benson, now playing for the Atlanta Hawks, tells an O'rena crowd.

In his five years at Oakland University, Keith Benson gave his coaches, teammates and supporters unquantifiable value and a host of memories, while helping elevate the status of his still-young Division 1 college basketball program. Whether it was a thundering slam dunk or one of his signature blocks of an opponent's shot, Benson excited O'rena crowds and helped bring national notoriety to the Golden Grizzlies at an unparalleled level. On Monday night, the Oakland community and athletics department gave the former OU star something in return — a documented place in its history. At halftime of the Grizzlies' stunning upset win over Tennessee, Benson became just the third player in OU history to be bestowed with a retired jersey. His …

OU Grabs Program-Affirming Upset Victory Over Tennessee

'This was about showing Oakland University to the world and to the United States of America,' Golden Grizzlies coach Greg Kampe said about 89-81 win over Volunteers.

Last December, Oakland University surprised the nation with an upset of No. 7-ranked Tennessee on the road. At the time, the win served as a memo to the college basketball world that the Golden Grizzlies had arrived and should forever be taken seriously. On Monday, nearly a year later, Oakland put a golden exclamation point on that memo and spread the word again with a dominating performance against the Volunteers in a rematch at the O'rena. The Grizzlies never trailed in the game and wound up defeating Tennessee, 89-81, to cement their place among the elite mid-major college basketball programs in the country. The upset was televised by ESPN, making it the first nationally broadcasted home game in program history. "This wasn't about our …

OU in National Spotlight Again: ESPN to Televise Tennessee Basketball Team Looking for Revenge

The Golden Grizzlies will host the Volunteers at 9 p.m. Monday; tickets are still available.

It was almost a year ago that Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies basetball team claimed a breakthrough win on the road against nationally ranked University of Tennessee. Tonight, the Volunteers are coming to the O'Rena. Tickets are still available for the 9 p.m. game, which will be nationally televised on ESPNU; it's the first time that ESPN has been on campus to televise a game, according to a news release from the OU Athletics Department.  The Golden Grizzlies are coming off a three-game winning streak overall and an eight-game home-court winning streak. In fact, the team is 40-2 for its past 42 home games inside the O'Rena. Students can purchase tickets for $20, and all other tickets are priced at $25. Fans can purchase tickets …

With O'Rena Preoccupied, Grizzlies To Play at Adams Tonight

OU basketball team will play free exhibition game against Windsor at 7 tonight.

With the Oakland University community gearing up to host a Republican presidential debate Wednesday night at the athletics center, it's understandable that preparations for the nationally televised event would be engrossing. Anticipation of the debate has created a stir throughout the campus in recent weeks — a type of excitement not present at the O'rena since the Golden Grizzlies' men's basketball team welcomed its supporters in for a March Madness selection show party last winter. As fans filed out of the arena following last Wednesday's preseason win against Spring Arbor, the major preparations began immediately to ready the 3,000-seat complex for the presidential hopefuls. This, of course, left head coach Greg Kampe and his players …
