It turns out that Double Mocha Macchiato in your hand not only says something about you – it also says something about where you live in Michigan. If you are carrying a mermaid-emblazoned cup, you are more likely to live in one of the state’s politically blue counties and there’s a good chance there’s a university nearby. There are (at least) five Starbucks stores in Rochester, including one inside Meijer. And there are countless more in surrounding communities such as Troy, Auburn Hills and Shelby Township. Dr. Robert Shaner will host informal meeting from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday and again from 7-8:30 p.m. May 8.
Dr. Robert Shaner, Rochester Community Schools Superintendent, will host an informal Community Coffee from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10 at the Administration Center, according to the district's web site. The community is invited to stop by for light refreshments and conversation. The community coffees are sponsored by Dr. Mark J. Roy of Oakland Optometry. The next coffee meeting will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8. Robert Shaner, a former teacher, principal and police detective, took over as leader of Rochester Community Schools on March 1.

If the beloved baristas of Dessert Oasis needed proof that they had been missed during their closing last month, their first 24 hours after re-opening may have been the defining example. Downtown Rochester was booming with visitors to its popular Fire & Ice Festival and Dessert Oasis had re-opened in a new location three blocks down Main Street from where they first opened in 2009. On that Saturday, the line for fresh-roasted coffee and hot cocoa (theirs is made from Ghirardelli chocolate, melted in a crockpot) was out the door for four-and-a-half hours straight. Experts provide advice on how to reduce calories and fat, what to avoid.
With the holiday hustle between family visits and crowded stores, many times, coffee lovers will pop into the nearest shop for a warm, flavored holiday treat. If you’re watching your waistline, beware: many of seasonal treats have as many calories as an entire meal, said Cindy Weiss, a Registered Dietician with Sola Fitness in Rochester Hills. “You really are drinking up to 1/3 of your calorie intake for the day,” she said. “There are people who are in denial when it comes to drinks, they think because its a liquid it’s not as bad as what we eat, but that’s not true.” There are ways to enjoy holiday treats without drinking a meal.
