Happy Birthday, Dr. Van Hoosen: You Would Be 150 This Week

Bertha Van Hoosen was born in 1863 and grew up on what is now known as the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm.

The Rochester community is invited this week to celebrate the 150th birthday of one of the women who founded this area. Bertha Van Hoosen, an author, teacher and doctor, was one of the most well-known and longest-practicing women physicians of her time. She grew up on the farm where the birthday celebration will take place on Tuesday. Admission is free for the birthday party, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm. The event will feature birthday cake and a presentation by historian Maureen Thalmann. Van Hoosen was born in 1863; as a schoolgirl, she worked on her family's farm and witnessed the birth of countless animals, which helped inspired her to pursue a career as a surgeon. Jane -- would you be able to provide that research to the group that is working on a human rights ordinance in Rochester Hills, which has a council that Will NOT support nor even listen to a proposed human rights ordinance. I find it curious that the woman on whom our city bases so much of its history would not be considered as the local politicans deny equal rights to so many of our residents. …   more ›

Woman Renowned for Medical Research Will Speak in Rochester

Mary Guinan was one of the earliest AIDS researchers; she will speak as part of the Rochester Hills Museum's leadership series.

A woman whose career path connects her with one of the icons of history in Rochester Hills will talk to a local audience about leadership. Mary Guinan, the past president of the American Medical Women’s Association, will speak on Women's Leadership in Medicine on Sept. 28. The 7 p.m. lecture at the Royal Park Hotel is free and open to the public. It is part of a leadership series presented by the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm and its Broomfield Center for Leadership.
