With help from Rochester firefighters and police officers, Pet Supplies Plus donates dog and cat food to community food bank.
It all started with a miniature long-haired dachshund named Benny. We told you Benny's story here: about how he found his way last fall to Pat and Ed Kane of Rochester, who loved him and cared for him until he passed away in their arms three months later. Her short time with Benny inspired Pat to launch Benny's Kitchen, a component of the Rochester Community House "community kitchen." And on Tuesday afternoon, the pet food pantry received a bulk donation. Pet Supplies Plus in Rochester Hills donated 100 bags of dog and cat food to Benny's Kitchen. The Kanes shop at the Walton Boulevard store and co-owner Lindsey Roslonski said she knows Benny's story well. The donation will help serve an often-forgotten need in the community, Kane said. …

Pat Kane of Rochester started Benny's Kitchen after spending 10 weeks caring for a dachshund in need. "This is for the pets who may go unfed or unloved,"
Pat Kane first met the miniature long-haired dachshund whom she would later call "Benny" on a hot, dry day last June. She sensed the dog needed her help, so she whispered something in his ear. He heard her message and returned to her — for good — months later. For 10 weeks she and her husband loved and cared for Benny, until the day in January when the dog, sick with cancer and fighting pain, died in her arms. The relationship between the Rochester woman and the dog who loved her back was short-lived. But the memory of those days has inspired Kane to give back to other animals in need. Lindsey is awesome. Her and the gang at Pets Plus have always been their to extend themselves. Prior to this, Lindsey had donated a trunk load of dog and cat food and which we were distributing.
