Rochester Schools Ranked Among Best High Schools in 'U.S. News' Rankings

Adams is ranked No. 17 in state; Rochester ranked No. 37; Stoney Creek was not part of the rankings.

U.S. News today released its fourth Best High Schools rankings, and Adams High School was placed among the top 20 in the state. International Academy in Bloomfield Hills was ranked No. 1 in Michigan and No. 5 nationally. The rankings are the first for the news site since 2009. They include data on nearly 22,000 public high schools across the country. According to the report, U.S. News partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research. Schools were first analyzed at the state level in terms of how well students in each school performed on state assessments. High schools that made it through that first analysis were then eligible to be ranked nationally, in terms of college readiness. This article explains, in-depth…

It does seem odd that SCHS did not even make the list. I also would like to have more light shed on this issue if possible.   more ›

All Three Rochester High Schools Advance to Regional Cheer Competition

The Falcons win the district title, followed by Stoney Creek, Lake Orion and Adams high schools.

The Rochester High School cheerleaders and their longtime coach, Susan Wood, brought home the district trophy Saturday in a competition at Troy Athens High School. Stoney Creek High School took second place and Adams High School took fourth place. Along with Lake Orion High School, whose cheerleaders took third place, the teams will advance to next Saturday's regional competition in Lake Orion. The top four teams to finish at regionals will advance to the state finals in Grand Rapids in March. Less than half a point separated Rochester and Stoney Creek. "You used to be able to win with one good round, and now you have to have three good rounds," said Wood, who has coached Rochester High's cheer team for 31 years. Before that, she cheered …

Students Put Press on Red Wings

Adams High Schooler is among 60 student journalists who fired questions at some of the biggest names in the Detroit Red Wings.

In a press conference held at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday, 60 young journalists took aim at some of the more recognizable faces of the Detroit Red Wings and fired at will. John Nidhart, an Adams High School senior, was among the crowd. One by one, high school journalists from around Michigan stood up and asked Wings general manager Ken Holland, head coach Mike Babcock and current Red Wings players Dan Cleary, Todd Bertuzzi, and Valtteri Filppula questions on topics ranging from their recent record-breaking home game winning streak to whether or not they think the Wings are the greatest franchise in professional sports. The press conference was all part of the Detroit Red Wings’ annual High School Journalist Day, where students get a chance…

Rochester Students Raise Over $21,000 for Grace Centers of Hope

The Pontiac charity is the recipient of cash and food donations thanks to Adams and Musson students.

Tears flooded Shannon Sokol’s eyes when she heard the ballpark figure that Adams High School students raised for Grace Centers of Hope. Sokol, who is the communications director for the Pontiac-based charity, was floored, she said — even before learning that the total amount raised during the school’s charity week for the organization was $21,400, surpassing the student body's goal by over $6,000. “I am still amazed … just in awe at all that they’ve done,” Sokol said. “We felt unbelievably honored and absolutely speechless in the amount that they raised.” Prior to charity week, which took place last week at Adams High School, a handful of charities presented their missions and needs to the student council. The student council then made the…

What a great effort by Adams High School to get involved, taking action and helping a great cause. My wife and I have supported the Grace Center of Hope for a few years now and feel they are a great resource to the area. It is wonderful to see High School kids to get involved and make a difference. It is a lesson for all of us to find a good cause we believe in, then get involved and support it …   more ›

Adams Theatre Students Get Ready for a Sweet Production

On Friday night, guests of Adams' Dessert Theatre can expect entertainment plus dessert.

Adams High School Theatre students have a treat in store for audience members on Friday night. Not only will they be performing and directing a handful of one-act plays – many that were written by students – but they will be topping off the evening with dessert for guests. Dessert Theatre has been going on for years at Adams, according to Adams Theatre Director Jo Anna Pillsbury. Dessert Theatre performances typically fall in the spring, but the theater group decided to move it up a bit this year. “This is their opportunity to choose their own shows, to develop their skills as directors and get their feet wet doing the directing process,” Pillsbury said. “They have opportunity to kind of find something that will sing to them as individuals…

Top Videos of 2011: Here's What You Watched, Rochester

Here's our list of some of the top videos based on your clicks, Facebook likes and comments – from an 'Irish wake' to Black Friday madness around Rochester and Rochester Hills.

We all know the old adage, "A picture is worth a thousand words." Sometimes videos can portray a story better than any other medium, no matter how much we write about it. Visual. Concise. Objective. Here's our list of the video stories that captured the attention of Rochester Patch readers this year, along with dozens of others you may have missed the first time around: Mourning patrons of O’Connor's Public House gathered on Jan. 13 to march through downtown Rochester for the Irish wake of fictional “Gus O’Connor,” who was honored by a toast of Jameson whiskey and a humorous eulogy when his first name was dropped from the local tavern. Naturally, residents from Rochester and Rochester Hills had little choice but to show up and pay their …

Adams Basketball Returns With Strong Defense and Postseason Goals

The Highlanders bring back a host of returning varsity players with a similar strategy: create the mismatch and exploit it right into the regional championship.

The Highlanders are back on the court after a deep postseason run in the spring. “Last year we finished so strong, but this year we want to make our own identity," Adams senior John Neidhart said. The Highlanders are off to a 1-0 start with a 59-42 win against Lake Orion High School, but it's a long road back to the regional championship game where the team's season ended at Southfield High School last year. "We want to be district champions again, but we know that will take a lot of hard work, so we have to work towards that every practice,” Neidhart said. The Highlanders have two returning starters and several players that were a big part of the rotation last season. “Our youth and inexperience may cause us some issues early in the …

Adams Ousted from Playoffs in Heartbreaking 27-21 Loss to Port Huron

The Highlanders finish their postseason run with a 7-4 record overall and a new all-time rushing record holder.

The Adams High School Highlanders (7-4) were eliminated by the Port Huron Big Reds (10-1) in a 27-21 loss on the road during Round Two of the playoffs. Three straight flags started the game – all false starts on the Highlander offense and Big Red defense.  It was a sign of things to come from the referee crew who called numerous penalties on the Highlander team.  Most penalties were false starts caused by a noisy Big Red fan base, and many came on crucial plays, including what would have been a lead-recapturing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Adams head coach Tony Patritto summed it up, saying it was "the worst game they played all year." Best Play:  Adams head coach Tony Patritto called a passing play on fourth-and-10 in the first half, …
