Runners brave cold for 8th annual Hometown Hustle in Rochester.
Runners braved frigid morning temperatures Saturday as more than 1,150 runners ran the eighth annual Hometown Hustle in Rochester, raising more than $22,000 for the Rochester Community Schools Foundation. Eric Lohr of Lake Orion, a track and field coach and teacher at Adams High School, paced all runners with a 16:39.7 finish. The 1,150-plus runners set a new record for the event, which drew more than 800 runners in 2012. Lohr, who teaches physics and wilderness survival at Adams, ran his first Hometown Hustle on Saturday and apparently wasn't bothered by the colder temperature. "I liked the cooler weather," he said. Grizzlies to depart Summit League on July 1.
Oakland University will join the Horizon League beginning with the 2013-14 season, President Gary D. Russi announced Tuesday, according to a statement from university officials. The move will apply to all of the university's athletic teams beginning July 1. "Oakland University is pleased to be the newest member of the Horizon League," Russi said. "The universities in this conference are strong academically and they value the student-athlete experience. Oakland fits well with them and we look forward to being part of their tradition of excellence." Russi said the move makes sense academically and financially. Another Central Michigan standout with Rochester-area ties is getting a shot in the NFL. Adams alumnus Cody Wilson has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions, according to the Morning Sun. Wilson will join Chippewas teammates Eric Fisher—who was chosen last week with the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft—in the NFL. According to MLive, Wilson, the son of Kensington Church pastor Dave Wilson, had a team-high 74 receptions for 840 yards with three touchdowns in 2012.
Heidi Langegger of Rochester Hills can now retire after 33 years at Volkswagen.
It was after his standout performance in the Senior Bowl when Eric Fisher of Rochester Hills insisted his mother, Heide Langegger, retire, according to a report in USA Today. The 2009 Stoney Creek graduate and Central Michigan standout, along with his older sister, had been raised alone by Langegger and Fisher felt his mother deserved a break. Langegger, however, was reluctant, telling USA Today the idea of not working went against everything she had tried to instill in her son. Eric Fisher is making a big entrance into the national spotlight, and it isn't just from his 6-foot-7, 306-pound frame. As the top pick Thursday in the NFL Draft, the 2009 Stoney Creek graduate, Central Michigan standout and new Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle was making the media rounds after the draft, dropping in on talk radio shows and meeting Kansas City Chiefs fans. The Kansas City Chiefs have selected former Stoney Creek standout Eric Fisher with the top overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft on Thursday. Fisher recently finished his senior year at Central Michigan University. He graduated from Stoney Creek in 2009. At Buffalo Wild Wings, 1234 E.
