Known around town as RARA, the Rochester Avon Recreation Authority provides organized sports and fitness programs, kids'More classes and special community events to residents of Rochester and Rochester Hills. It is governed by a board of city and school officials and funded, in part, by tax dollars. Popular programs include childrens' dance courses, breakfast and dinner with Santa Claus events, a fall road rally and sports leagues for all ages. The office is located on East Second Street at Rochester Road South.

The Rochester Community Schools district encompasses almost 14,800 students enrolled in 22 schools across Rochester,More Rochester Hills and Oakland Township. Governed by a seven-member Board of Education, the district boasts a 93 percent graduation rate; 95 percent of graduates attend a post-secondary school.

The district includes 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, one adult education school and one alternative high school. The district offers a pre-school and pre-K program, as well as before- and after-school care at the elementary and middle schools.

Superintendent Fred Clarke hosts occasional community coffee gatherings to meet and greet parents and community members.
