The following guest opinion article was submitted by Ravi Yalamanchi, a Rochester Hills City Council member and resident of the city. Detroit is in the news everyday for crime, Kwame Kilpatrick or financial challenges. Ironically all three are connected in some respect. Detroit financial challenges started in early 70’s as more people and businesses started to move out into the suburbs. In the past four decades there has never been responsible management of the schools or the city. One thing that stayed constant in the past four decades is poor, failed and corrupt leadership at the Council, School Board and Mayor’s office. Both Detroit Public Schools and City government have been bloated for decades with high costs to the taxpayer. While …

Dear Editor: Pope Benedict's resignation came as a shock to the entire world. As a Muslim, I was taken aback when I heard the news. I remember the day that Pope John Paul the 2nd left his post to approach the heavens. I shed many tears that day. Today, I look on with admiration to see a man resign the authority of the papacy for the betterment of his faith and his people. Not many in this world have that strength of constitution. I, as every Muslim should, pray for his health, and for the peaceful reign of his successor. Muslims and Catholics share a common goal of peace in this world. And with every generation that passes, that goal can become more and more achievable. Sincerely, Mahir Osman, Rochester Hills Have a letter to the editor to…

Patch readers will remember Angela Youngblood from her "Patch Drives" test-driving series last year. Read about her new vehicle — and about how her big, old van turned into a teachable moment for her whole family.
Editor's note: Rochester mom Angela Youngblood chronicled her car-shopping adventure across Oakland and Macomb counties last year for a series we called Patch Drives. Patch readers went along as Youngblood test drove a Honda Odyssey, Ford Flex, MINI Cooper, Chevy Suburban, Dodge Journey and Chrysler Town & Country. Here is the long-awaited ending to her research and travels. Last spring, I was van shopping. I was searching for the right fit for our family. You all went along for the ride while I tried out different SUVs, minivans and even a MINI Cooper. Eight long months have passed and I finally got my new ride. Let me back up a bit. Since we last talked, the van has been falling apart little by little, sort of like my pride. After …

I'm planning a birthday dinner out and want to try something new. Also, I have an 18 month old so someplace semi kid-friendly (i.e. nothing fancy - hehe)." Can you help? Post a comment here with your suggestions. Have a question for Patch? Post it on our Facebook page or send an email to editor Kristin Bull at kristin.bull@patch.com

Most around town agree with the Postal Service's new Monday-Friday letter delivery.
When the U.S. Postal Service announced on Wednesday that mail would no longer be delivered on Saturdays, Rochester and Rochester Hills residents reacted positively. On the Rochester Patch Facebook page, readers sounded off on the change, which the Postal Service says will save about $2 billion annually. The new Monday-Friday letter delivery schedule will begin in August; packages will still be delivered on Saturdays. "Great - one less day of getting bills," said reader Jim Hample. "Fine with me. I always forget to check it until Monday anyway," said reader Ben Schutz. "I don't really like it, but I understand it," said Jennifer Prall. Most readers said they wouldn't miss their Saturday mail. "They could go to three days a week, as far as …

Race card? Who mentioned the race card? Only you did, right now. What, you think I am black? I am just making sure I understand your holier-than-thou tone to tell Ravi how you really know about the "suburbanites" and "you people north of 8 mile" When in fact you and your family are the people north of 8 mile living in Rochester Hills. Why did you not have the courage to bring back a piece of …   more ›
