Remembering Mayor Somerville: She Was 'Everybody's Neighbor'

Friends and colleagues of former Rochester Hills Mayor Pat Somerville talk about her life and legacy.

When a resident of Rochester Hills had a question, it wasn't unusual for then-Mayor Pat Somerville to pack up a folder full of city ordinances and drive to the resident's house — not necessarily invited — to answer it in person.  On adventures like those, the former mayor was known to stay for hours. And she normally left the home with a newfound friend or two. Somerville, the city's mayor from 1999 to 2006, died Saturday at her home in Florida after a long illness. She was 80. Pat was a mayor of the people, she listened and understood what her constituents wanted from city government . Pat was fair minded and did not push her wants on her citizens. OCC Mourns Passing of President David L. Mathews

He died last week, two months after his appointment to the Oakland Community College leadership role.

The following press release was submitted by Oakland Community College to Rochester Patch. The President of Oakland Community College’s Auburn Hills Campus, David L. Mathews, passed away on Feb. 28, two months after his appointment. Highland Lakes Campus President Gordon May will again step in to serve as interim Auburn Hills President, while retaining his responsibilities at Highland Lakes, until a replacement is selected. “David Mathews’ passing is a profound loss, not only for his family, but the entire college community where he was highly respected,” said OCC Chancellor Tim Meyer. Former Rochester Hills Mayor Pat Somerville, 80, Dies in Florida

Visitation is planned for Friday in Rochester.

Pat Somerville, the former mayor of the city of Rochester Hills, died Saturday in Florida. She was 80. Somerville was the city's mayor from 1999-2006.  Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Potere-Modetz Funeral Home in Rochester. Visitation is planned for 2:30-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home; a funeral will be held Saturday, but the time and place are pending.  Somerville will be buried in Van Hoosen Jones Cemetery. Legendary Detroit Weatherman Sonny Eliot Dies in Farmington Hills Home

TV pioneer Eliot, 91, passed away peacefully at home in Farmington Hills.

Detroit's beloved weatherman, Sonny Eliot, passed away in his Farmington Hills home Friday. He was 91. The Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills is handling funeral arrangements, which are pending. Known for his sunny disposition and his rapid-fire quips, Eliot had a 60-year career in Detroit broadcasting and was a pioneering TV personality. Eliot joined the staff of WWJ-TV (now WDIV) after World War II and stayed there for 35 years. He was a weatherman, host of the annual Thanksgiving Day parade broadcast and hosted an "At the Zoo" series. After TV, he kept the fun going on WWJ radio (950 AM). He was born Marvin Schlossberg on Dec. 5, 1920, in Detroit. Eliot was also a veteran of World War II, according the The Michigan Compainion book, and …
