Labor Day Ode to a Swimming Pool

For many years Around Town Laura resisted the siren call of the Lifetime pool. This year she caved. On the day that pools are closing around town, here's her heartfelt good-bye.

Ode To a Swimming Pool

For years I resisted your siren call

"Too expensive"

"Too crowded"

Excuses — I had them all.

This year something softened my hardened heart,

I jumped (no diving allowed) right in at summer's start.

How did we manage to live apart?

(My house was a lot cleaner, that's a start.)

The swimming test my kids both passed

My eldest loved to swim his laps

My youngest lived to ride the slide

I watched sweet summer days slip by

At the side of you, swimming pool.

There was always a friend — or five — to be found

On sunny chairs us Moms would lounge,

And discuss the way that  ends

While children laugh and splash with friends.

Blue, blue, blue

Is how I feel

As summer comes to an end

No more days lounging at the pool, my little ones are off to school.

Not so little, but bigger growing

How I wish to make time slowing!

But on lonely winter days so cold and cruel,

I'll have warm memories of the swimming pool.

(Editor's note: An ode to a pool? Has Laura gone insane?

Let's say too much chlorine on her brain.)
