Celebrating Service to the Rochester Community

Touching countless lives of families. Saving 3 lives with one hour of your time. Being a hero. These are all ways that donating blood - a gift that is free- can be a rewarding experience.

You may have heard that this week we are celebrating the spirit of volunteerism in our nation. A week were we take the time to recognize those people who tirelessly contribute to the well-being of others.

The American Red Cross greatly appreciates those who volunteer their personal talents to the Rochester/Rochester Hills Community.  If you're looking for ways to help and are unsure what you can do click the link here to find ways of helping.

From disaster relief to blood donation to simply spreading the word you are doing a great service to your community.

When I was a 19 year old college student I had trouble donating blood.  My veins were uncooperative and I had trouble with fainting from low blood sugar. I attempted to donate blood several times and was rarely sucessful.  I gave up.

For nearly 20 years I told myself there wasn't time. I couldn't donate.  But...I wanted to do more.

2 years ago the opportunity presented itself for me to become a site host - a volunteer coordinator who recruits blood donors locally and who cultivates a relationship with donors.  I thought to myself - THIS is something I CAN do!

In the last 2 years I have had the wonderful opportunity to host 6 blood drives per year, meeting hundreds of blood donors and families and friends of blood recipients.  I love hearing terrific stories of personal motivation.  And, I have been able to donate 7 units of blood as well!

The blood that is donated at St. Philip's each year has gone to help over 750 hospital patients in our metropolitan area. I can only hope that I inspire my donors, that I inspire others who are looking for a way to help and that I have inspired the next generation to do anything they can to help.

This Friday, I am working through St. Philip's Episcopal Church, The American Red Cross and The Girl Scouts of the USA.  Touching 3 points of volunteerism on one day.  Come to St. Philip's from 1pm-6:45pm and see the ways you can volunteer.  Baldwin Elementary's 5th Grade Junior Girl Scout Troop will be assisting in hosting the blood drive - through the Pint Sized Hero's Program.
