Rochester Stoney Creek Varsity Volleyball Wins OAA Title

It is the second straight Oakland Athletic Association title for the team.

The Stoney Creek Varsity Volleyball team will head to Districts in a couple weeks with a perfect league record after completing their final league game beating West Bloomfield High School in three straight sets. This has been an exciting year for the Cougars who are transitioning under a new head coach.

As the summer was winding down, the Cougar volleyball players were anxiously awaiting the placement of their new Varsity Coach, who would also lead the growing program at the school.

It wasn’t until a couple of weeks before their first scheduled tryout day that Athletic Director Shane Redshaw found the perfect fit to his program. Adrienne Leone, former Oakland University stand-out and coach at Legacy Volleyball Club was appointed to lead the Cougars. Leone had a tough challenge as the school was full of talented young girls but only had a couple of weeks to get the teams selected and ready for game play.

The Cougar Varsity team started their season a little later than most with their first tournament at Lake Orion High School at the end of their first week of school. Most other teams had three or four tournaments under their belt by this time.

The Cougars had a very tough draw in their first match as they went up against State Finalist and home team Lake Orion Dragons.  The Cougars defeated the Dragons in two straight sets.  It was a great way to start off the season and an opportunity for the team and the coaches to see what they could do. The bar was now set high.

Stoney Creek fell to the Blue Division in the Oakland Athletic Association in 2011.  This was a disappointment and it was a test to see how the Cougars would rebound.

As suspected, the determined Cougars busted right through going 7-0 in the league. Because of their victorious year in 2011, they were asked to move up to the second division (White) to play this season. The mighty Cougars went undefeated again going 7-0. However, even more impressive is that they did not lose one set to an opponent going 21-0, beating everyone in three straight sets.

The team is comprised of 14 players; four Seniors, Alexa Caporuscio (Captain), Maddie DelSignore, Emily Hardy and Jessie Sattmann (Captain); eight Juniors, Delaney Cuckovich, Morgan Darin, Lauren Voss, Natalie Voss, Megan Feely (Captain), Natalie Gotko, Sophia LeClair, and Michelle Zabat; and two Freshman, Gabrielle Cuckovich and Samantha Sattmann.

Caporuscio will be playing Division 1 volleyball at St Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, NY. DelSignore will be playing volleyball for Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in fall 2013.  Emily and Jessie are still making the final decisions as to which colleges they will be attending.

Alexa Caporuscio leads the team with 342 assists and Jessie Sattmann has the highest hitting percentage and leads the team in blocks.  Delaney Cuckovich leads the teams with 156 digs, while Morgan Darin leads the teams with 95 kills.

The Cougars hope to continue their season with wins at the “Rochester City Cup” on October 23rd and Districts at the end of the month.
