Adams Graduate Waszak is Winning Pitcher for Spartans at Comerica

He strikes out a season-high six batters during the game against Central Michigan University.

Andrew Waszak of Rochester Hills, a 2009 graduate, was the winning pitcher for Michigan State University on Wednesday night at Comerica Park.

The Spartans (23-10) defeated Central Michigan University 3-1 in the first collegiate baseball game at Comerica Park. Both teams scored all of their runs in the first inning. After, Waszak retired the next eight batters and 20 of his last 24; he struck out a season-high six batters and walked one.

"Andrew threw well," Michigan State head coach Jake Boss said in an MSU athletics department press release. "He threw the last time against Central Michigan and I thought threw well that day, too. Strikes were the key. I really thought he located well. They hit a lot of balls that seemed to be hit right at guys."

"It was based off the fastball," said Waszak, who earned all-region, all-district and all-area honors while at Adams. "I kept it down in the zone and got ahead in the count, and my secondary pitches worked from there. The defense was outstanding tonight."

Waszak is one of two Rochester Hills athletes on the team; Chase Rihtarchik, a graduate of Brother Rice, is a redshirt freshman.
