Rochester Bus Drivers Take Second Place in 'Roadeo' Contest

Oakland Schools competition recognizes school bus drivers who excel at their craft.

A team of school bus drivers from Rochester Community Schools took second place recently in a driving skills competition in the Oakland Schools parking lot in Waterford.

Drivers from eight Oakland County school districts (Birmingham, Lake Orion, Rochester, Southfield, Troy, Walled Lake, Waterford, and West Bloomfield) took a “busman’s holiday” last Saturday and competed in 11 events that tested skills such as depth perception, spatial relationships, mirror usage and backing techniques, railroad crossings, and student pick-up procedures.

The Bus Roadeo began in 1994 as a way for drivers to improve driving skills and qualify for the Michigan School Bus Driving Championship, which will take place on June 20 at West Branch-Rose City Area Schools.
