Recycling Program Up For Approval at Tonight's School Board Meeting

The district recycling program would be implemented in nine test buildings next year.

Members of the Rochester Board of Education will consider tonight a four-year contract with Waste Management that will include recycling services for the school district.

The contract includes waste and recycling services for 27 school district locations. The projected annual waste removal cost will be $78,540; the projected cost of the recycling program would be $7,543 for a test program in nine buildings the first year. It would then cost $100,146 the second year (mostly for the installation of cement pads for dumpters at certain school sites) and $14,478.60 in subsequent years.

As the school district puts more effort into recycling, the cost of the waste removal services could decrease.

Also on the agenda tonight:

  • The proposed layoff, effective June 30, of three administrators in the facility operations center and transportation department. According to the employees' contracts, they may be terminated if the board of education determines "that its financial condition is sufficiently grave as to warrant a reduction in personnel" with a 90-day notice. The positions are Ground and Maintenance Manager, Routing Coordinator and Transportation Coordinator.
