North Hill Teacher Named State PTSA 'Educator of Year'

Barbara Kranitz to be honored tonight at school.

Today was an exciting day in Barbara Kranitz's first-grade classroom at in Rochester — for more reasons than one.

Today, a butterfly was born.

Students in the class, which is decorated with hanging tissue-paper butterflies, have been waiting patiently for a butterfly to pop out of its cocoon inside a small tent on a shelf in the back of the classroom.

Teacher Kranitz shared in their excitement, even though she had news of her own.

Kranitz will be honored tonight by the Michigan PTSA for being Educator of the Year. She is the only teacher in the state to be awarded this honor, which last year went to Superintendent David Pruneau.

"I feel no more deserving than any other teacher in this school or in any school in Rochester," said Kranitz on Tuesday.

"I feel privileged and honored to be at this school, and am one lucky person to receive the award."

Michigan PTA President Mary DeYoung-Smith will present the award to Kranitz at a special reception tonight at the school. Kranitz was nominated for the award and voted the winner by a panel of out-of-state judges.

"Mrs. Kranitz was recognized for her outstanding dedication to the students and parents of North Hill Elementary School," said North Hill Principal Michael Behrmann. "Additionally, she was honored for her innovative teaching strategies, collaborative efforts, ability to raise the self-worth of all children and commitment to PTA."

This is Kranitz's 33rd year of teaching. She previously taught at Brewster Elementary School and in private schools before teaching at North Hill. She lives in Farmington.

Jennifer Kosnic is a parent volunteer in Kranitz's classroom this year.

"She's the most caring teacher I know. She loves every single child and makes each one feel special," said Kosnic, whose daughter Sydney is in the class. "She puts a positive spin on everything. She is very patient, kind and loving."

Tonight's reception begins at 6:30 at the school and is open to the public.
