'Hot for Teacher' Former Student to Appeal Court's Ruling

Joe Corlett was suspended from Oakland University after writing steamy essay about professor.

Joseph Corlett, the 57-year-old former Oakland University student who was suspended from the university after writing a steamy essay entitled "Hot for Teacher," plans to keep his lawsuit alive, the Detroit Free Press reports.

A Detroit federal judge ruled in July that Corlett's essay, inspired by the Van Halen song of the same name, wasn't protected by the First Amendment. In his essay, Corlett fawns over his writing instructor, comparing her to Ginger from TV's Gilligan's Island. Corlett has said students in the English 380 class were told to write honestly and that no topic was off limits. The university, however, said the work was inappropriate and suspended the student, who now lives in Sarasota, FL.
