Hamlin Elementary Students Celebrate Diversity in Parade of Nations

More than 20 nations are represented in the annual ceremony at the school.

Did you know Mexico introduced the world to chocolate? And in Latvia, hockey is a favorite sport?

Children, teachers and parents at learned these facts and more Friday morning as they celebrated the end of their Cultural Heritage Week with a Parade of Nations ceremony in the school gym.

"We're here to celebrate diversity in our school," said Principal Gary Cornish. "We are so very lucky."

This is the fourth year of the celebration at the school. More than 50 students, parents and teachers dressed in clothing representing more than 20 nationalities and paraded in front of the school community. Students heard a simple fact about each country and smiled in wonder at the detail of many of the costumes.

"Here at Hamlin we work together, we play together, we learn together," Cornish said.
