Elementary School Celebrates 50 Years

McGregor students debut new school song in commemoration of anniversary.

Since its opening in 1961, more than 18,000 students have learned to read, write, add and make friends at McGregor Elementary School.

Fifty years of learning and memories were celebrated on Thursday afternoon at a special assembly at the school.

"It sounds like you all are enthusiastic about your school and your families are enthusiastic about your school, and I am so glad, and my father and grandfather would be thrilled," said Kathie McGregor Altherr Rogers, whose grandfather, Howard L. McGregor Sr. donated the land for the school.

"And they would be thrilled that your mascot is named Howie."

Students debuted a new school song and received proclamations from Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett and Oakland County Commissioner Jeff Matis. Rochester Mayor Jeff Cuthbertson spoke to the students about some of his memories attending the school.

McGregor's principal, Sharen Howard, read aloud a letter from Congressman Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Hills), who attended McGregor Elementary.

All of the speakers applauded the rich history of the school.

"Now you are a part of the McGregor legacy," Barnett told the students. "Maybe on the 100th anniversary of the school, you will write a letter back to McGregor Elementary as the president of the United States."
