Avondale Sophomore Seriously Injured in Baseball Accident

Student remains in intensive care following Monday morning incident.

An Avondale High School sophomore remains hospitalized in intensive care today after being hit in the chest with a baseball during pre-season conditioning at the school.

Avondale Superintendent George Heitsch said in a statement that the 16-year-old junior varsity player missed a ball that was thrown to him during the practice session Monday morning. The ball hit him in the heart and he lost consciousness, Heitsch said. A coach, who was there at the time, began administering chest compressions while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

The student was taken to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital and then transported to Children's Hospital of Michigan.
