Avondale School Leader Named to Principal Post in Royal Oak
Gary van Staveren will be principal of Oakland Elementary School.
An Avondale school leader is leaving the district to take a new position in Royal Oak.
The Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools Board of Education announced Thursday that Gary van Staveren, assistant princpal of in Rochester Hills, will be the new principal of Oakland Elementary School in Royal Oak.
Van Staveren replaces David Pontzious, to be principal of .

Van Staveren was selected from more than 100 applicants. He has 13 years of experience in education: eight years as a teacher and five years as an administrator.
"I am very excited to be here," he told the Royal Oak board as he thanked members for the opportunity to serve the students.
