The public is invited on Monday to meet the 15 candidates who have applied for one open seat on the Rochester Board of Education.

Candidate names were released Friday afternoon. They are:

  • Julie Alspach
  • Marsha J. Andres
  • Jon Barth
  • Jackie L. Bieber
  • Kelly Edward Borowski
  • Jason Hubbard
  • Brian Stephen Kirksey
  • Jordan Kotubey
  • Donald McLaughlin
  • Sherry Wynn Perdue
  • Joshua Raymond
  • Jeffrey Small
  • Patrick A. Thomas
  • Gary R. Tucker
  • Michael Zabat

Gerald Moore's resignation last week from the Rochester Board of Education has left an opening on the board. Board members plan to fill the position by Dec. 10, just in time for interviews with potential superintendent candidates to begin. The appointed member will serve until the next school election, which will be November 2014; that elected board member will serve until the end of 2016.

Community members are invited to attend an open house to meet candidates from 6-6:45 p.m. Starting at 7 p.m., board members will interview applicants during a special meeting. Interviews are expected to take between 10-15 minutes each.

At 7 p.m. on Dec. 5, the board will interview finalists during a special meeting. The new board member will be sworn in and begin duties on Dec. 10.

How wonderful to see so many people on this list! Although I personally only know of two of them, I hope many are simply 'parents' who will bring a much-needed voice of balance to the Board. My familiarity with Joshua Raymond has shown him to be one such voice. His advocacy skills, and diplomacy skills would be a great asset to our School Board to be sure. I look forward to 'meeting' all the candidates on Monday, and will be spreading the word for this important meeting!

It is positive to see that 15 citizens are willing to serve on the Board of Education at this critical time. Thank you to each of you community minded people. How can we find out more about the candidates prior to the meeting on Monday evening?
Joshua Raymond December 01, 2012 at 10:21 PM
June - and anyone else, my personal email address is Joshua@Raymond.org. Feel free to send me any questions or issues you would like to see addressed. Serving on the Board of Education is about serving the community and I want input from the community on the issues important to them, particularly from those who may be a bit shy about standing before the Board of Education. I want all voices to be heard because that will make our schools even better. You can also click on my name to see a brief profile.

I would like to think this is an open process, but I believe the Board appoints the replacement. With the vast mAnority, if not all the current members, having been backed by the MEA it would appear highly unlikely anyone with opposing views would be considered. I would like to be wrong

For my own education, what's wrong with the MEA? What's the definition of backed?
