Miss New India by Bharati Mukherjee (2011)
Anjil's father is looking for a husband for her but her dreams are bigger than marriage and children.  When she leaves her small town in India for Bangalore with the goal of being a call center operator, her plans are simple and innocent.  Reality is shocking to her.  Sometimes humorous, this book was an eye-opener to me about culture in India, even in our modern times.  I forgot that many cultures are still very tradition-bound and not technologically knowledgeable much less savvy.  ~ Recommended by Sue

Doc by Mary Doria Russell (2011)
Doc Holliday was a dentist in Georgia in the 1870's.  He developed tuberculosis as a young man and moved to a drier climate to help heal his lungs.  He first moved to Dallas and then on to Kansas City.  Card playing made him much more money than fixing people's teeth, and so the legend began.  This fictionalized account of Doc Holliday's life was very engaging.  I 'read' this as an audio book in which the reader was a southern gentleman with a cowboy drawl making the experience authentic and very enjoyable.  ~ Recommended by Sue
