You could have what is known as tooth sensitivity. You don’t have to life with the pain, there are things you can do to eliminate the discomfort. 

1.       You are a tooth grinder: Grinding your teeth, most commonly while sleeping wears down the enamel (even though it is the hardest substance in your body) and exposes the inner layer of your tooth which houses hollow tubes that lead to your nerves.  Talk to your dentist about a mouth guard that protects your teeth while sleeping. Using an electric toothbrush is recommeneded for optimal plaque removal

3.       You have gum disease:When infection is present around the teeth and gums often times the root surfaces of the teeth become exposed. Having more frequent cleanings with a desentiser being applied often relieves the sensitivity

4.       You are using the wrong toothpaste: Some people experience sensitivity to the  ingrediants in whitening or tarter control toothpastes. Try switching to Sensodyne and see if the sypmtoms reside

5.       You have a cavity: When decay starts on a tooth it can be sensitive to sweets and cold. Having a filing placed before the decay gets bigger can prevent a bigger problem such as a tooth ache or tooth loss.
