Main Street Makeover: Mountain or Mole Hill?

As my fellow local , there's a lot of concern for the businesses downtown when all of this construction starts coming April 2nd. There's talk of upping advertising budgets, new ways of communicating with your customers and a lot of all-out panic. But is all of this worry really necessary?

The vast majority of the businesses on Main Street have been there a long time and the ones that haven't been around as long have a fairly well established customer base (, anyone?!) Taking that into account, those loyal customers who will continue shopping downtown will do so regardless of the road conditions, right?

So, if all of those businesses are continuing to be frequented, can't we then assume that the shops people are walking by to get to their favorite spots are also going to have folks stopping by?
