Crime Report: E-mail Scam, Purse Fraud on eBay

A roundup of local police reports.

A 35-year-old Rochester Hills woman fell victim to a $1,200 e-mail scam March 31.

According to police reports, she received an e-mail that said her cousin was stuck in London without a passport or credit cards and asked her to wire money.

She wired $1200 at Meijer via Western Union. On April 3, she received another e-mail asking for an additional £699, and she became suspicious.

She called her cousin, who stated she wasn’t in London, nor was she in trouble. The woman then filed the report.

Designer purse swapped for inexpensive handbag on eBay

A 99-year-old Rochester Hills woman sold an expensive Chloe Betty handbag on eBay to a buyer in California before she left on vacation. According to police reports, when she returned, there were e-mails stating the bag was damaged and eBay had refunded the money after the buyer returned the bag.

However, when she opened the box, there was an inexpensive Nila Anthony bag and a bad number at which to reach the buyer. The woman was advised to continue the matter with eBay.

Unlocked car used for smoking, but nothing taken

Someone rummaged through a Rochester Hills woman’s 2010 Subaru Impreza on Bedford Square Drive on March 30.

Police reports indicated she had parked her unlocked car unlocked overnight in the complex parking lot; when she woke up and inspected her car, the dome light was on, there were ashes in the cup holder and her CD booklet was moved onto the passenger seat. 

Nothing was reported stolen.

Suspects attempt to break into business

Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a business on Star Batt Drive after the co-owner of the business reported that someone had attempted to break into the building.

The co-owner said some time over the weekend of March 28, an unknown person attempted to pry the lock off the rear overhead door. There was a pry mark on the side of the door directly in line with the interior deadbolt, which was bent away from the door.

Reports indicated there was no recoverable evidence and nothing that could be processed for latent prints.

Mysterious gate damage

A locked gate dividing two parking lots at Huntington Ford was damaged on March 17. It it was bent and partially disconnected from the fence, according to police reports. The cause of the damage is unknown, and there was no known damage to any of the vehicles in the lots.
