Children Left in Car in Rochester Hills; Mom Could Face Charges

Onlookers said the 1- and 4-year-old children were alone for at least 20 minutes.

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing possible charges of child neglect on a Troy mother who told police she left her children in the car of a shopping center while she filled out a job application.

Onlookers called 911 at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when they noticed her children, 1- and 4-years-old, crying hysterically in the car parked at a shopping center at 2100 S. Rochester Rd., south of Hamlin.

When deputies arrived, the mother, a 35-year-old Troy resident, had just returned to the car, which had one window down slightly for air. She told police that she left the children in the car because they were asleep. The children were transported to Crittenton Hospital for evaluation and, upon being cleared, were released to their father. Children Protective Services was also notified.

Onlookers said they had been watching the car for 20 minutes before the mother arrived. Sheriff's officials said they were presenting the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office today for review.
