Rochester, What Is Your Favorite Horror Movie?

It's the night the horror genre was made for— so sit back, relax and pray that Tom Cruise doesn't ring your doorbell. Intrigued? Read on.

My editor had an idea.

"Why don't you write a story about your ten favorite horror movies for Halloween?"

But here's the thing— I haven't watched a horror movie since my age started with a 1. They scare me!

I turned to the resource that never lets me down, our Patch readers.

On Facebook I asked:

It's the Friday night before Halloween so it seems like the perfect time to ask, "What's your favorite scary movie?"

Here are your answers.

And the winner is..... Halloween

Michael Myers reigns supreme in Rochester. Reader Angela Todd was the first to mention the "old classic" Halloween but plenty of other fans hopped on board hitting the like button to make it the No. 1 Horror Movie in Rochester (at least according to this very sophisticated poll.)

Stephen King's The Shining came in second place. Snowbound with Jack Nicolson and an axe seems to hit a certain fear button in our town. I wonder how it plays in Florida?

And that wasn't King's only mention on our list. The TV mini-series It with Pennywise the Clown (I shudder at the word) got a mention too.

Speaking of evil clowns, Poltergeist took third place in our poll. Sure, the 1982 movie was only rated PG but what kid wasn't terrified of the TV sign-off after seeing this flick? And what woman of a certain age doesn't brush her hands and say in her best Tangina voice, "This house is clean" after a especially productive day of housekeeping?

Oh, that's only me? Well, let's move on.

"Quid pro quo, Clarice"

Silence of the Lambs may have forever ruined the pairing of chianti and fava beans for me— not to mention a great old Tom Petty song— but it remains another favorite of Rochester residents.

Friday the 13th not only got votes, it also inspired readers to quote it. Personally I don't remember any dialog from those movies, just that creepy chanting Jason would do right before he struck. You know how it goes. Go ahead, say it. It might just give you the shivers.

Honorable mentions

Other movies that got a (just one) nod from our readers were:

  • Trick 'r Treat
  • Evil Dead 2
  • Saw 3
  • Jeepers Creepers
  • Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Seven
  • Wait Until Dark
  • Exorcist (that was my vote and probably the reason I can no longer watch horror movies.)

Don't forget to laugh

A couple of our readers have a sense of humor, even when it comes to horror.

Beetle Juice with Michael Keaton got a vote from Anne Wolanski as her favorite funny/scary movie.

And perhaps reader Lisa Benedict had the most chilling vote with "anything with Tom Cruise in it."

Only the candy they don't like

Now you've got some options for tonight, Rochester.

When the trick-or-treating is done and the sugar-buzzed babes are safely tucked in bed, why not watch in your favorite horror movie?

Put up your feet, pop some corn and graze on the kid's candy (only the stuff they don't like, of course.)

And tell us, what are you watching?

Oh yeah! "What Lies Beneath" w/Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfieffer. Blends ghost story with Hitchcockian cinematography- spooky

You had me scared and hiding under my desk at "quid pro quo," Laura. I have to say that movie was the first and last scary film I saw on the big screen!

Little known movie that scared me silly and still does is "The Changeling" with George C. Scott. It's always at the top of my list. And "The Exorcist" was one of those movies I saw and then wished I'd never seen it. Love scary movies, but holy moly, that one is actually tooooo much.

Could not agree more with your "Exorcist" review, Mandy!
