I recently read in the mirror FRONT PAGE 8/11/13 that the commission may vote to make it a criminal offense( I opposed) AND HOLD owners responsible to pay for damage to the Cities ancient sewer system, IF the damage was caused by the property owners drain into the sewer. Due to the owner NOT PROPERLY maintaining their system. Confusing as it is ridiculous. Seems that if owners do not maintain their sewer system they could end up in Jail wit a fine. I HAVE MINE SNAKED ONCE A YEAR if I HAVE THE MONEY or do I pay my water bill so I can use the sewer. There are way too many variables involved here as who knows what people actually pour down their sewers that may weaken the structure by your drain connection. What about factory chemical fires. Doesn't that all go down the sewers? Plugged up sewer covers with grass and leaves sticks. How are we supposed to know how the previous owner maintained their sewer. How do we even know what condition its in right now. What we do know is that it has always been a hit and miss repair system. Only repaired when it floods the street and the street caves in. This is very similar to the recent fence fiasco , people being fined 20 years after a fence has been up and told to move it back. Come on Commission STOP bleeding us residents to death, possibly loosing our homes due to you ridiculous savaging for money. If they want this done then I say that they must bear the cost of checking and giving every owner photographic proof of the current condition of their sewer. That is now possible. They would also have to determine through testing to be able to emphatically say it is the current owners fault and not the result of wear and tear of a system built close to the dark ages.
