Oakland County Sheriff's Office Reports Death of Police Dog, Boomer

Boomer assisted in several high-profile arrests.

The following was submitted by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office:

After seven and a half years of service to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, one of the OCSO K-9 Unit, Boomer, recently died, the department indicated. 

Sheriff's officials report Boomer was off duty at the time at his home with his handler and partner, Deputy Lonnie Mullins, who resides in Springfield Township, doing what he loved most, running around the backyard. An autopsy performed determined Boomer had a tumor on the side of his heart that wore the heart lining down. He was born on Feb. 17, 2005, in Slovakia, and was 8-1/2 years old at the time of his death. Boomer was only one week away from retirement.

“From finding dangerous narcotics to arresting felons, Boomer did it all and did it well. He conducted several hundred tracks and drug searches.” said Sheriff Bouchard. “He was a Deputy through and through and his presence will be missed by the Sheriff’s office as well as the Mullins family. RIP.”

  • Boomer searched and discovered 5 kilos of cocaine hidden inside cans of tomato sauce, leading to numerous search warrants and arrests in Oakland County and trailing back to Las Vegas. 
  • While assisting Waterford Township Police on a possible breaking and entering at a retail shopping plaza, Deputy Mullins and a Waterford Sergeant observed a suspect running across the roof. Boomer led his handler to the suspect truck that was hidden behind a cell tower building behind the plaza. With the assistance of Waterford Township Fire Department, Deputy Mullins and Boomer were lifted to the roof to conduct a search, where Boomer located the suspect hiding inside an air conditioning unit. 
  • When Deputies were dispatched for an alarm at the Salvation Army in Pontiac, Boomer was called to conduct a building search after a broken window and noise of an intruder was discovered by responding Deputies, who established a perimeter. Upon arrival, Deputy Mullins and Boomer began searching the building. As Boomer closed in on the suspect, the suspect jumped from a second story window to get away for fear of being bit. Perimeter Deputies took the suspect into custody. 
  • Deputy Mullins and Boomer were called to track a suspect who had fled from a Deputy in Springfield Township, who observed the suspect and vehicle after a breaking and entering at Leo’s Coney Island in Independence Township earlier in the day. The suspect attempted to lose the Deputy in Oak Meadow subdivision in Springfield Township, abandoning the vehicle and taking off on foot. Boomer tracked for approximately an hour over numerous surfaces, including six lanes of I-75, through several backyards, and onto a 100-acre game preserve where Boomer located the suspect hiding in some brush.
