How to Make the Most of Your Disney Cruise Line Vacation: The Basics

You've decided to set sail aboard one of the Disney Cruise Line vessels, and you naturally want to make sure that you get the most out of your cruise. Today, I'm going to share my favorite tips for enjoying your Disney Cruise Line vacation to the fullest, starting with the basics.

Transportation: The Disney Cruise Line offers transportation to and from its home ports and the nearest major airport. When you book a Disney Cruise Line transfer, you can rest assured that you will be picked up and delivered to your port on time. Most importantly, if your Disney Cruise Line transfer is delayed by a traffic incident or mechanical difficulties, your ship will wait for you (this is not the case if you book a private transfer).

Port Adventures: "Disney-speak" for shore excursions, these activities provide an opportunity to experience each port of call to its fullest. I highly recommend booking at least one port adventure during your cruise. Start by visiting the Disney Cruise Line website; here, you can explore your options and save your favorites. Then, as soon as possible, reserve your adventures. First-time cruisers can book them 75 days prior to departure; some returning guests can book even earlier.

Tip: Don't feel compelled to book a shore excursion for every day at port. A port day is a great opportunity to remain aboard your ship and explore everything it has to offer...in a much less crowded environment!

Onboard Activities
: Each night of your cruise, you'll receive a Personal Navigator (a schedule of the next day's events and activities). Consider setting aside time each evening to develop a plan for the following day. Start by choosing an activity or two that you'd like to experience as a family, then build the rest of your day around those events. Be sure to make time for character meets, children's activities (at the Oceaneer's Club, tween-dedicated areas, or teens-only spots), adult-specific events, and the Broadway-caliber evening stage shows.

Tip: Having a plan ensures that you don't miss out on some of your "must-do" activities. That being said, allow room for flexibility and modifications; you are on vacation, after all!

Check back next week when I delve deeper into the specifics of how to make the most of your Disney Cruise Line vacation!
