This week, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I’m going to offer suggestions on how to spend a romantic, kid-free evening while you are on your Disney World vacation. Many people (including myself) initially balk at the idea of leaving the kids behind and setting off on an adults-only adventure. They feel guilty about spending time apart on what is supposed to be a family vacation. But they shouldn’t. In fact, I’ve found that, by mid-week, my kids are the ones who are most ready for a respite from all of the “family togetherness”.
So, what do you do with the kids on your “adults-only night”? You have two choices. First, many of the deluxe Disney resorts have beautifully-themed, professionally-staffed childcare centers. Every evening, fully potty-trained children ages 3-12 are entertained with crafts, activities, and movies in these safe, impeccably-decorated centers. Dinner is even provided! Best of all, you do not need to be a guest at a Disney resort to take advantage of these centers, but reservations are required. Alternatively, you can hire an in-room babysitter through Kid’s Nite Out, Disney’s sanctioned childcare service.
Once you’ve decided on your childcare provider, it’s time to plan your romantic night! Here are a few suggestions:
Reserve a Special Dinner: Many Signature Restaurants on Disney property cater more to adults than children, but the crème de la crème is Victoria and Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian resort. An 11-year winner of the AAA Five Diamond Award, this restaurant provides the ultimate experience in elegant dining. Enjoy a 7-course meal crafted by talented chefs in an opulent setting. Best of all, this restaurant serves adults only! Reservations are required.
Charter a Boat for a Fireworks Cruise: Enjoy an up-close view of Wishes Nighttime Spectacular (at the Magic Kingdom) or IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth (at Epcot) when you book your very own fireworks cruise. Snacks and drinks are provided, and a more substantial meal can be arranged.
Hit the “Town”: Downtown Disney, that is. Restaurants, shops, music, a bowling alley (with an adults-only floor), and Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba…this place has it all!
Take a Walk on the Boardwalk: Disney’s Boardwalk area (near Epcot) features surrey bike rentals, street performers, amazing restaurants, and bars (including Jellyrolls, a dueling piano bar). It’s the perfect location for a romantic evening.
Visit the Theme Parks: Who says that the theme parks are just for kids?? Use this time to hit the big thrill rides that your kids are too young to go on. Or enjoy some of the more adult-oriented attractions that would bore your kids to tears. Spend some time leisurely browsing the shops. Or just find a bench and watch the world go by.
So, there you have it! Your perfect romantic evening at Disney World awaits! When it’s time to pick up the kids, you’ll be refreshed and ready for some more action-packed family time! That’s if you can pry your kids away from the childcare centers…
