The Michigan Republican Party recently released a commercial clearly meant to divide the region, blaming Detroit’s challenges on Democrats. The Republican Party chose to use Oakland County as a point of contrast, leading viewers to believe that Republicans would never let the same fate befall its residents. Ironically, Oakland County is facing the exact same challenges – and nobody is talking about the issues.
The Republican Party has since decided to pull the ad that it had posted, but the irony remains.
“Many of the issues addressed in the commercial are also challenges we are facing right here in our own backyard,” Howley says. “Oakland County lost 175,000 jobs in the last decade, median household is down dramatically, property values have plummeted, our landscape is dotted with empty malls and buildings and we have an administration that not only actively encourages a pay-to-play culture, but participates in it as well. Is it any wonder that Mr. Patterson wanted the ad pulled as soon as possible?”
Howley has consistently focused on the issues facing Oakland County during his campaign. “While I certainly think Mr. Patterson should take some responsibility for the challenges facing Oakland County, I’m more concerned that he hasn’t even acknowledged that they exist,” continued Howley. “Throughout this campaign he has failed to articulate a vision relative to moving Oakland County forward. In fact, he’s failed to offer one new idea, proposal or program that might help us change our course.”
