GreyHeart Rescue Walk at the Paint Creek Trail

GreyHeart Greyhound Rescue & Adoption of Michigan is
holding the GreyHeart Rescue Walk at Paint Creek Trail in Oakland Township for the third year in a row.  This is a walkathon to raise money for GreyHeart to rescue retired racing greyhounds.  GreyHeart members and their parade of greyhounds will be walking the trail and the public is encouraged to donate and/or take part in this fun event.  You don’t have to own a greyhound to
participate.

Sadly, seven states in this country still have legalized
dog racing, but rescue groups have made an impact on this cruel sport in the last ten years.  Most people do not realize how dangerous it is for these dogs to run on an oval track at 45 mph.  Horrible and fatal injuries occur on a
regular basis from dogs colliding with each other, hitting the concrete wall, being electrocuted by the lure, and falling.  When their racing career ends, usually when they are 2 to 4 years old, they may go back to breeding farms, sold for medical experimentation, or killed.

GreyHeart rescues retired racing greyhounds from tracks,
vets them, and places the dogs into foster homes rather than being kept in small crates for up to 22 hours per day as they are at the racetracks.  They learn the ways of home living in homes and eagerly take on the role as a family member. These gentle, laid back dogs make wonderful pets and have many years left to live and love.
