To Eat Meat, Or Not To Eat Meat?

Rochester Hills mother asks, "Is a vegan diet for you?"

On January 1, my husband decided that he was going on a nonfat, vegan diet. I stress NONFAT because we have friends on vegan diets who consume large amounts of French fries, potato chips, and pasta smothered in olive oil.

Three months into this diet, my husband, without much help from exercise (not that he was really out of shape to begin with), has lost 12 pounds. Not only does he look great, but the color and condition of his skin is beautiful. A family member also recently complimented him on his youthful appearance.

Now let me start out by saying that we had been on a diet that was primarily vegetarian, and my husband is very appreciative of the fact that I enjoy preparing healthy meals. He has never been a picky eater. In fact, virtually everything I prepare is, in his words, "the best food I've ever eaten."

My quest to present him with healthy, balanced, and good-tasting vegan meals was on.

Well, we have had some winners and some that were undeniably losers. I didn't think it would be such a challenge to cut out dairy. Ha! Was I mistaken!

Nevertheless, he has managed to stay a healthy vegan.

The girls and I have not been vegan. We enjoy our dairy meals far too much, and I feel it is best for them to have a well-rounded diet. So turning out the family meals has often had my head spinning.

For the most part, I have to say that it has been a creative journey. The results regarding my husband's health have made it all worth it.

I encourage you to seek out some vegan alternatives to your diet. This change is not for all of us, although a few vegan meals a week might be a refreshing change of pace.
