UNDERREPRESENTATION OF WOMEN IN THE MALE-DOMINATED JOB SECTOR

Award-Winning ‘Top Ten Woman of the Year’ to Speak

Although women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold only 25-31 percent of science, technology, engineering (including IT), and math related jobs, i.e., accounting and financial planning. This has been the case throughout the past decade, even as college educated women have increased their share of the overall workforce.

Although some of the world's most successful companies are now headed by women, on average they are severely under-represented at the top. The Government for Science reports, “occupational and horizontal segregation still persists, with middle rungs dominated by men and the upper rungs of managerial consultancies and banks nearly out of reach for women.  This shows that the ‘glass ceiling’ – an invisible barrier that impedes the career advancement of women – is still present.

”Winner of the prestigious 2013 National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Michigan Top Ten, DianeYoung, will share her professional expertise and personal journey relating to the challenges and adversities she overcame throughout her successful career in a male-dominated sector as a financial adviser.  Diane began her financial advising career in the tough New York metropolitan area.  Before starting her own independent firm in Michigan, she was vice president of the Midwest Division of a global financial services company and focused on developing the women’s market.
