Lets get communicating! From an early age our babies are able to communicate.  It starts with their first precious smile and continues to flourish throughout a lifetime. As parents and caregivers we can help start that very early by communicating with our children using motor development such as sign language. We will look at some wonderful information by Joseph Garcia.  Lets learn together about all the benefits, facts, and how to start it within your own home!

There is no research that has directly tested the best time to start teaching signs. Children who are introduced to signs when they are a little older are likely to start learning them more quickly because they are developmentally more ready to use them for intentional communication; however, children who are introduced to signs earlier do learn and use them at a younger age.   Children reach communication milestones (including those involving the eyes, hands, and mouth), at different ages.  Most children don’t start to use conventional gestures – such as clapping, pointing, showing, and waving – to communicate until they are between 8 and 11 months old, and even a few months older for some children. Children seem to go through a progression of their use of signs for intentional communication; first they use gestures and signs as part of the routine in which they learn the sign, then they use it spontaneously to initiate communication or express a need, and finally they use them in response to others’ words or signs.
