Where to Get a Flu Shot in Rochester, Rochester Hills

Here are the hours, costs and details about pharmacies giving flu shots in the area.

It's not too early to think about the flu.

That's the sentiment of David Bauer, an emergency room doctor at in Rochester Hills.

Even though Bauer mostly sees flu patients in the ER in January and February, he said he has seen them as early as October, and so now is the time to consider getting a flu shot.

"The earlier, the better," he said. "Last year, the flu came in all shapes, sizes and varieties. A shot is still the best way to prevent the flu."

Bauer said flu symptoms typically include fever and headache without a runny nose or other cold symptoms. The flu spreads by contact, so in addition to the shot, Bauer said preventive measures include hand-washing and wiping down countertops and other surfaces.

Flu shot guide

This year, eight types of flu shots are approved in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published a table with details on each of the shots.

Always consult your primary health care provider regarding the type of shot and dosage that may work best for you.

  • The flu shot is approved for people as young as 6 months old.
  • For people 65 and older and for people who have weakened immune systems, there is an option for a high-dose flu shot that contains four times the amount of antigen contained in regular flu shots. We detail here whether a pharmacy offers the high-dose version.
  • Some flu shots contain mercury-based preservatives, commonly called thimerosal, designed to prevent the growth of bacteria in the vaccine. We detail here whether a pharmacy offers the preservative-free version.
