What's Festive, Downtown and Green All Over?

Despite drizzles, Green Living Festival draws crowds to downtown Rochester.

It's sort of a farmers market: there are breads and maple syrups and honey for tasting.

It's sort of an art fair: you can shop for flip-flops made from upcycled denim and tote bags made from used coffee packages, among other finds.

And it's also an eye-opener: about the products, services and lifestyle changes that can help you live a greener, more eco-friendly life.

The and coinciding Party for the Planet continued Saturday  in downtown Rochester.

Karen Mcleod brought her daughters Rachel and Amanda to the opening night of the festival.

"We are trying to be green," said Mcleod, of Auburn Hills. "We had heard all about this festival and thought we would check it out."

A couple hundred people had the same thought on Friday night as the festival opened with live music, sunshine and the energy of people who wanted to showcase a greener lifestyle.

The free festival continues from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. today and from noon-5 p.m. Sunday. For details, including a lineup of special programs, visit MIGreenTeam.com.

If you go:

  • Organizers say the festival will happen rain or shine; almost everything is under a tent.
  • There's no designated parking exclusively for the festival, but parking in public lots around Rochester is free. There's also a free shuttle service running between (park facing Avon Road) and the festival.
  • Download the app: search "ExpoTec" on your iPhone or other smart phone and then search for "Green Living Festival" for the schedule and map.
  • There's plenty of food to try on the festival grounds, from $1.50 hot dogs to $6 organic burgers, from giant bags of kettle corn to smoothies.
