Weekend Planner: Books, Tours, Games and a Cooking Class

Here's what's happening around Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township this weekend.

After a long and hot week, the weekend is finally upon us. We've been counting down the days and giving you options for things to do; here's a recap:

 

  • Where/When:  Thursday, 4-8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
  • Cost: Book prices vary with most priced between $0.50 and $1.
  • Why go: Anyone looking for great deals and fun summer reading will have a good time browsing through all of the titles.

  • Where/When: , Friday 7-9 p.m.
  • Cost: $5.00 per person; seniors over 55 and students, $3.00. Children under 12 are free.
  • Why go: Learn about downtown Rochester's historic sites and hear stories about the people and businesses that made our town what it is today. Rod and Susan Wilson will be your tour guides; look for Rod in his top hat on the northeast corner of Water Street.

  • Where/When: , Saturday 3-5 p.m.
  • Cost: Free
  • Tickets/Registration: Register for this event on the library's website by clicking on the events calendar here.
  • Why go: Beat this ridiculous heat with a cool afternoon at the library. Kids ages 8-12 can meet up with friends to play some video games rated "E" for everyone. Parents must stay in the library, which gives you a perfect chance to browse the magazines or check out the latest summer beach read.

  • Where/When: , Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
  • Registration: Not needed; you can just show up.
  • Cost: Free
  • Why go: The technique class at Williams-Sonoma was inspired by the Farmers' Market. You will learn about the types of fruits and vegetables you can buy at a farmers' market, how to select and store them and how to use produce to make a quick summer meal – especially handy when it is hot and you want to eat light.

And because we know that you like to have options, here are a few more for you:

  • Movie Night at , Saturday at 8 p.m. The folks at Rochester Play! will watch your kids, let them play and watch Toy Story 3. $20 per child, $10 for an additional sibling.
  • Movies in the Moonlight, East 3rd and Water streets at 9:15 p.m. The movie tonight is 'True Grit', rated PG-13. Free.
  • Cherry Festival at , Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Free.
